Another Twizzletop

I made this hat to cover my thin-haired head in Mexico.

Two quotes that are unrelated to these photos:

1. Life's most persistent and urgent question is, "What are you doing for others?"
-Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

2. There's a difference between beauty and charm. A beautiful woman is one I notice. A charming woman is one who notices me.
-John Erskine, author

Today is my youngest grandchild's first birthday. So long to infancy. Happy Birthday, Dexie!

Life Below Zero

Since returning from CA, there hasn't been a night that has been above 0 degrees fahrenheit. My bedroom is the coldest in the house and it's shivery cold when I hop in bed. From my friend, Hazel, I learned the benefits of the hot water bottle. It keeps my toes warm all night long and is still warm when I get out of bed in the morning.

From my friend, Jan, I learned that it is absolutely necessary to have a hood on one's jacket in this environment and that you can go outside every single day if you are dressed appropriately. Yesterday I would have shunned any outdoor activity as it was -20 F when I got up, BUT Jan convinced me it was perfectly fine for snow shoeing on Lake Pocasset. (By the time we went, it was a tropical +20 F!) It was heavenly and I almost forgot that I professed to like California weather better than Maine's.

Boston, Brookline and Bunny

This isn't the best picture of our new President, but I had to have something to remember the day, shot with my camera off the t.v. Like everyone I know, I want to remember this day always and the nearly universal elation that was felt around the world.

Maggie was a member of SNCC in the sixties and marched in Alabama. In more recent years she has worked to combat racism in a special program at Harvard, focused on elementary school children. Much of her life has been devoted to the cause. Now she is waging a personal battle with her third bout of cancer. That I could be with her meant everything to me. Oh, JUBILATION!

"What a CHAPEAU!" said Ms. Mag. You know how to do it, Aretha.

On MLK day, Karen and I went to the MFA and saw (among other things) Indian bed curtains from a stately English home. How about the teeth on this hund??

Three Bunnies are about as cute as mifflettes.

My own little bunny/granddaughter is about as cute as you can get. I was pleased to initiate the wearing of this combo of clothes I got her for her birthday on eBay. The top and pants were advertised as being a play outfit, and the skirt is pure wiggle-walk from Oilily.

She READS! Well, not actually the text in front of her, but she utters streams of speech while pointing to the words in front of her.
I'm smitten.

Sorry I missed getting Wendy and Barbara here too, as we had a super day at an urban thrift store where Barbara stocks up on gorgeous European men's shirts for her quilt-making.

Hats!

Dylan's Winnipeg grandmother knit him this snuggly hat for Christmas. He can't pull it off!

Ethan worked a lot of the day on snow removal. I think he enjoys it, but no matter, as it must be done.
Cindy's wore her hat for this photo, but mostly she worked in the kitchen, starting with waffles in the morning, perogies for lunch, homemade cinnamon bread and chicken with dumplings for dinner. YUM!
Sophia now likes the formerly rejected Twizzletops hat I knit for her last spring.

A real cowgirl with her hat and horse from Auntie Betsey:

T has always claimed he wanted to be Peter Pan and never grow up. When I stumbled on this hat at the Happy Dragon Thrift Store in Los Gatos, I couldn't resist bringing it home to him.

Leaving Los Gatos

On Sunday, Syl gave a premature birthday celebration for Dex, so I could be there. He didn't know what all the excitement was about as we (12 people) sang Happy Birthday to him around the cake with one candle lit.

Saturday we took a hike to Castle Rock. Zach considers himself a "biggie rock climber" now.

Measuring Time by Haircuts

These birds of paradise are about to be born! They're swelling with rosiness.

Measuring time by haircuts, I have been here through three of Zach's. I took him for all of them and it has been a pleasure. I don't know why my fujifilm insists on focusing on the background instead of his face which takes up more than 50% of the photo area.

Coming upon this fallen rose, I thought how spectacular a place this is, where roses lie delicately at one's feet unexpectedly.

Zach asked if he could have it, proving that roses and chocolate (in his hands) are of equal importance.

Hanging Around with the Boys

'Twas a bit of a challenge for Zach to push Dex uphill in his Push Around Buggy. Dex THINKS he is steering.

Zach has really enjoyed the geometric puzzles from Auntie Betsy. His favorites are the train and the truck. What a surprise!

It's a little boy dream world to have heavy equipment in your yard day after day. Not a mother's dream world, mind you (lots o' mud dragged inside), but two little boys'.

Academy of Science, Golden Gate Park

Thirteen year old Alice was my constant companion at the Academy. She knows a great deal about marine biology, though her younger brother, Asa, is the resident authority at their house, the house of Ivan. This is a fun connection as I knew Ivan in Maine, though he has been in CA for ten years now.

We all loved the spotted stingray.

Albino Alligator who doesn't stand much of a chance in its natural habitat.

Jellyfish disguised as anenome

Engineer fish (for Ethan!)

Jellyfish, of course!

Roni-roo's First Haircut

Dexie was very pleasant throughout the haircut, during which time he sat on Syl's lap. We think maybe it tickled him?

We didn't even notice till the end that our next door neighbor was in the chair next to Dex! It is a Persian establishment as is our neighbor. She shows up well in some OTHER photos we have.

I carried him out on the street while his mom paid. There two older women admired him, told him he should be a model and that he had Paul Newman eyes. I was quick to point out that he had MY eyes, actually!
